Sands Films
Little Dorrit
A story told in two films.
In
1982, Sands Films
embarked
on the
ambitious screen adaptation of
Charles Dickens’novel.
The book is so rich in characters and Dickens is so able to show the
humanity in each
of them that the film grew to be 6 hours long and very detailed.
Work started on the costumes and on the sets using a huge quantity of
researched references.
Two years went on during which the wardrobe grew and the Marshalsea
Prison,
Bleeding Heart Yard and Mrs Clennam’s house were built at
Sands Studios…
The script, instead of a long story cut in two halves, became two films,
each telling the story, seen from the particular point of view of the
two main characters.
“Nobody’s Fault” is the way Arthur
Clennam sees things: his mother, his life, his work,
his failures in love and in business… and his blindness to
Little Dorrit’s love.
Then, “Little Dorrit’s Story” is the life
of Amy Dorrit, born in a debtor’s prison,
growing up and looking after her father; becoming rich and all the
while keeping
eople and things together… and her blind love for Arthur
Clennam.
In November 1985 the camera started rolling, and filming went on for 9
months!
The film was so well prepared that not a single day was lost. Music
recording, editing and
sound mixing lasted for nearly another year and eventually the film was
released to
huge critical acclaim, in December 87.
Many actors joined this venture to bring it alive,
the film has 250 speaking parts. Some very experienced actors, like
Derek Jacobi,
played their parts along young new comers, like Sarah Pickering:
without their
performances, the film would not exist. Many have now died; amongst
them:
Joan Greenwood, Patricia Hayes, Max Wall, Cyril Cusack and Alec
Guinness…
but the film is now here on DVD, a lasting tribute to their huge
talents.
