Sands Films is an independent film studio based in Rotherhithe since 1975. It is a film production facility providing period costumes and filming services for film and TV. It also produces its own films.

Sands Films is a private company with an unusually large number of small shareholders.

A fixed number of shares were issued between 2010 and 2012 to raise the capital required to purchase the freehold of the property Sands Films has restored and occupies since 1975.

This is a non-speculative scheme that spreads the ownership of an immensely valuable asset amongst a large group of like-minded people. Jointly the shareholders own Sands Films and its assets and this protects the property from being a target for developers. Jointly, Sands shareholders are guaranteeing the existence and availability of the studio to its clients and users, to its employees and neighbours.

The company's share capital is fixed and the company is not issuing new shares – but after 8 years, the pool of shareholders needs some renewing.

The shareholders are free to sell their shares, either to new or existing shareholders. A shareholders' club, open to all, was created at the 2014 AGM for shareholders to register their wish to dispose of or to acquire further shares in Sands Films.

This is an informal club without broker:  the actual sales/purchases of shares are by private treaty only, but are reported to the Company so that Companies House records are kept up to date.
